Why
community based tourism?
“Community
based tourism is an alternative income generating activity –
a way for us to preserve and celebrate our cultural heritage,
while improving our standards of living,” said a
Maasai elder.
As
with many other indigenous communities around the world, the
Maasai people have started small community based enterprises,
such as safari camps, for reasons to diversify their traditional
pastoral economy with the market economy. This gives the villagers
an opportunity to earn income needed to improve their standards
of living. Income from the camp are used to undertake development
programs such as building of schools, health clinics, and education
for Maasai children.
With
the ubsent of this program, the beneficiary community will not
have an alternative income generating activity.
All
revenues generated from this program is invested directly to
the local community, thus improving the local economy. At the
end of the day, a Maasai man or women will walk back to the
village with a hot meal on hand for her/ his family.
